The Cause of Roof Stains
The ugly, dark stains that are so prevalent are caused by algae, Gloeocapsa magma, that thrives on the asphalt shingled roofs in much of the country, especially in humid climates. Growth normally starts on the north side as well as shaded areas of the roof. The algae feeds on the limestone filler now being used in your roof shingles. In years past, this plant simply didn't have a food source. Therefore, roof cleaning was seldom necessary.
This all changed with the introduction of fiberglass roofing shingles during the past 20 years. The fiberglass roofing shingles made today contain massive amounts of alkaline food that this algae just loves to eat! That food, of course, being the limestone currently being used by shingle roofing manufacturers. The reality is that many property owners will have a problem with roof algae, cleaning and sealing the shingles is the way to slow down this process.
